Is Your 2026 Commercial Waste Contract Fit for Purpose?

In a year where we’ve seen the rollout of Simpler Recycling, growing pressure on businesses to manage waste and the possibility of greater penalties for non-compliance, it’s easy to find a reason to review your 2026 waste management contract well ahead of time.

For businesses across England, the regulatory landscape has shifted dramatically. The Simpler Recycling mandate, which came into effect for most businesses (with 10+ employees) in March 2025, requires the mandatory separate collection of key dry recyclables—including paper, card, glass, metal, and plastic – as well as food waste (no matter how small the volume).

By the time your 2026 contract is due for review or renewal, these new separation requirements should be firmly embedded in your day-to-day operations. The key question for business owners is how their current or prospective contract will support and optimise this compliance.

Key Considerations for Managing Business Waste Requirements in 2026

Compliance-First Service

Your contract needs to explicitly address the separate collection of the mandated streams. A generic ‘mixed waste’ service is now a significant compliance risk. Your provider should be offering clearly defined, separate collections for:

  • Food Waste (collected weekly is best practice).
  • Paper and Card.
  • Other Dry Recyclables (Plastic, Metal, Glass).
  • Residual (General) Waste.

Thinking Ahead to Optimise & Reduce Waste

The government’s commitment to increasing recycling rates is directly tied to increased costs for waste that ends up in landfill. Landfill Tax is set to increase significantly, making it more expensive than ever to dispose of general, non-recycled waste. A decent waste management contract should focus on maximising recycling volume to drastically reduce the costly residual waste stream. Reviewing your contract now allows you to explore services like ours that include a full waste audit and clear segregation plans to minimise your residual bin capacity and frequency.

Compliance, Tracking & Reporting

Simply having the right bins is not enough. Businesses have a Duty of Care to ensure their waste is handled legally. Your contract must detail the proper licensing, tracking, and reporting of your waste streams. Can your provider give you auditable data on your recycling rates and evidence that your waste is being diverted from landfill? This documentation is essential to protect your business against potential enforcement action and fines.

Get waste collections on track for 2026 and beyond

Audit Your Waste Streams: Work with us now to conduct a full waste audit, identifying exactly what you throw away and how to reorganise your internal bins and collection points to meet Simpler Recycling rules before the compliance pressure mounts.

Optimise Your Collections: Use the audit results to check your containers and collection frequencies.

Partner for Sustainability: Choose a provider committed to a high recycling rate. Our dedication to sustainability ensures your business is not just compliant, but actively contributing to a more circular economy.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get your 2026 waste management contract agreed. Start now to beat the rush – and the blues! Contact our team today.

Skip Size Guide

Skips are available in a variety of sizes. You’ll need to know the right sized skip for the job before you hire one. Otherwise, you may end up with too much waste left over and need to hire another skip – or you’ll get one that’s too big and wind up paying more than you need to.

Skips are measured in mass capacity – how much weight they can hold – and in volume, cubic yards or metres. Those in waste management can work with these metrics but for the average person, it’s much easier to measure in bin bags!

Skip sizes & dimensions

2 tonne skip

Capacity: about 25 bin bags
Footprint: Allow for 1.5m length and 1.5m width

Ideal for: single room clearances, everyday garden jobs, DIY waste, garage clearances

Price from: £140 (inc VAT)

4 tonne skip

Capacity: about 35 bin bags
Footprint: Allow for 2m length and 1.5m width

Ideal for: single room refurbishments, garden clearance, waste clearance

Price from: £190 (inc VAT)

8 tonne skip

Capacity: about 70 bin bags
Footprint: Allow for 3.5m length and 2.5m width

Ideal for: general house clearances, bulky waste, garden clearances, commercial waste

Price from: £270 (inc VAT)

12 tonne skip

Capacity: about 120 bin bags
Footprint: Allow for 4m length and 3m width

Ideal for: large house clearances, wood, plastics, light furniture and bulky items, flooring, windows, doors

Price from: £360 (inc VAT)

16 tonne skip

Capacity: about 150+ bin bags
Footprint: Allow for 2.5m length and 2m width

Ideal for: heavy waste materials such as bricks and plaster, metal, house refurbishments, windows, doors, commercial use

Price from: £460 inc VAT

What size skip do I need?

Garden clearing

Depending on the amount and type of waste, a 2 or 4 foot skip is usually sufficient for clearing garden debris, foliage and a small amount of mud or gravel. If you have a large amount of soil, gravel or mud to clear, you may need a larger skip due to weight restrictions.

Single room clearances

A 2 tonne skip ideal for single room clearances. Be sure to break down furniture and larger items into smaller parts where possible.

House clearances

An 8 or 12 tonne skip is the most common size used for house clearances. When deciding the size you need, think about how many bulky items you have like furniture, carpets and other fittings.

Kitchen refits

A 8 tonne skip is usually enough for a kitchen refurbishment consisting of cabinets, worktops, units, furniture and flooring.

Bathroom refurbishment

A 4 tonne skip is usually enough for a bathroom refurbishment consisting of a bathtub, tiles, a shower unit, and glass.

Refurbishment & renovation

A full house refurbishment will usually require a large 12 or 16 tonne skip, depending on the quantity of large, bulky items and heavy items. You will need a 16 tonne skip for removing bricks, rubble and windows.

Let’s Talk About the Right Lot of Rubbish

Sheridan waste bin

For businesses, responsible waste management has never been more critical. The environmental impact of waste is under the spotlight – and government regulations are tightening as a result. All types and size of business operations are required to comply with increasingly complex regulations applying to the disposal of waste and various materials.

On top of managing your business, it’s easy to brush something like waste management aside. But with increasing focus on environmental responsibility and sustainability, it’s your business’ reputation – and profitability – at stake. It’s an issue that you can’t afford to ignore. And let’s face it: we all want to do our bit to help the planet.

So what does sustainable and responsible waste management look like in 2025?

Waste management: what you need to think about

Your waste management strategy applies to all waste your business generates and how it is disposed of. In addition, businesses are encouraged to reduce their consumption, and reuse and recycle materials where they can to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

The biggest considerations for businesses are:

Waste type. Different types of waste need to be handled and disposed of in different ways. Under the new Simpler Recycling regulations, businesses are responsible for how their waste is handled after collection, too – so choose your waste management company carefully!

Logistics. How often does your waste need to be collected? How often does your recyclable waste need to be collected? How easy is it to dispose of waste?

Costs. What are the costs of waste disposal? How can it be made cheaper?

Internal processes. Do your staff need any additional training or resources to comply with your new waste management strategy? Could your setup be more efficient? How can you provide support to staff, customers and visitors to ensure end-to-end compliance in your premises?

You’ll need a tailored approach to disposing of business waste correctly. No two businesses are the same, and they all have different waste collection requirements. You’ll need to work with your provider to make sure that your waste is collected at a time to suit you – and them. Everyone wants to make their operations more efficient – waste handlers included!

That’s one of the main reasons it makes sense to have a local waste management company handle your bins for you, as they can align your waste collections with their other clients.

Free Waste Audit – Discover Where You Can Save

Do you ever question whether your current waste strategy is working effectively? You might be surprised by what we can uncover! Our free waste audit identifies potential savings, boosts efficiency, and reduces your environmental impact, often with just a few simple tweaks.

Book a free waste management audit

It pays to manage waste efficiently

To keep your business compliant with current regulations, and help you stay ahead of current developments in the future, you’ll need to make sure that you handle recyclable and non-recyclable waste correctly. It’s likely you’ll need at least four waste bins at a minimum: one for non-recyclable, general waste; one for paper and cardboard; one for food waste; and one for plastics, metal and glass.

The chances are, each of those bins will need emptying at different rates and different times. It may be unfeasible to lump all waste collection together when you generate more of one type of waste than another. If you pay a supplier to empty four bins when you only need one emptying, it’ll ultimately cost your business more money unnecessarily.

That’s why we offer flexible waste collection services, all customised to suit your waste volume, frequency, and site logistics. From everyday commercial waste to specialist streams like food, packaging, or construction debris, we’ve got the tools and expertise to manage it all.

If you want to improve how your business handles waste to ensure compliance with waste management regulations, be more efficient with disposal, improve sustainability and potentially reduce costs too, you’re in the right place.

New Simpler Recycling Scheme Legislation Manchester

From 31st March 2025, the new Simpler Recycling scheme becomes law in England, affecting all households, businesses, commercial premises and non-domestic premises, such as schools and hospitals. It could affect your waste management strategy and costs, so here we’ll break down the details so you can plan accordingly – and avoid a sanction by the Environment Agency.

What is the Simpler Recycling Scheme?

The idea behind the Simpler Recycling scheme is to simplify recycling. For businesses and micro-businesses, the waste categories liable for recycling are:

  • Food waste
  • Residual waste
  • Dry recyclable materials

If your business generates garden waste, it’s down to you to decide how it best fits into the specified categories and ensure it gets recycled accordingly.

How does food waste need to be managed under the new rules?

The new policy sets out new, clearer requirements for establishing:

  • What is and is not food waste
  • How food waste must be separated
  • How often it should be collected

What is food waste?

The definition of food waste is any form of food leftovers or waste generated by producing food, such as aluminium foil or disposable cutlery. This applies even if your business doesn’t serve food in any form. For example, under the new requirements, the staff kitchen must now give people the opportunity to sort their own waste into food or residual waste categories. And it’s the responsibility of the business to ensure the waste is properly sorted into recycling categories and collected correctly.

Which businesses need to comply?

Beginning 1st April 2025, all businesses with more than 10 full time employees in total are required to comply with Simpler Recycling. It’s not specific to any one location, so a business with seven employees in one location and four in another are still required to comply.

Businesses with fewer than 10 full time employees (micro businesses) are required to comply by 31st March 2027.

How do businesses comply with Simpler Recycling?

Businesses have a duty of care and must take reasonable steps to ensure that any and all generated waste is sorted into dry recycling, residual waste and food waste.

Examples of reasonable steps include:

  • Providing employees facilities to manage their waste into recycling
  • Providing enough storage for waste of different categories, e.g. larger bins
  • Ensuring adequate collection frequencies appropriate for the amount and type of waste generated
  • Displaying signage to inform staff and ensure their compliance
  • Checking your waste is collected by a registered waste collection company

It’s down to the business to organise waste collection and frequency, which can include Local Authority collections, or collections by a private sector company. Waste collection companies have a legal duty to ensure that dry recyclables, food waste and residual waste are collected separately.

However, if this is not technically or economically practicable, or has no significant environmental benefit, the waste collector can complete a written co-collection assessment.

Either way, the company collecting and handling your business waste must be on the Public Register of Waste Carriers, Brokers and Dealers

If you need help with ensuring your business is compliant with the Simpler Recycling Scheme, then reach out to one of our commercial waste specialists.

How will the scheme be enforced?

Non-compliance with the Simpler Recycling scheme can be reported via the Defra website. The general public is encouraged to report non-complying businesses.

Waste collectors can also report a business if they fail to sort their waste into pre-agreed categories.

What to do to comply

You’ll need to assess the volume of each type of waste you generate, and ensure you have the capacity to store it in between collections. Collections can be made as often as you need them. Defra have a waste calculator to help businesses calculate business waste and costs. Unfortunately, there’s no current funding available to help with any increased costs.

If you’re not already practising some form of recycling with your current waste collector, discuss your new obligations with them to see how they can accommodate you. Some collectors may specialise in some types of waste, or be ill-equipped to handle others. Make sure you’ve planned in advance so that any changes in collections will have minimal impact on your operations.

Need a skip?

Too much waste, not enough space? Book a skip for same day delivery and get rid of your recycling fast. Whether you need a secure skip or to remove heavily contaminated waste or have a surplus of dry recycling, if you need a skip in Manchester, Sheridan Skips will get one to you in a matter of hours.
