Supporting Manchester: Sheridan Skips Proudly Backs Manchester Clean-Up Initiative Once Again
At Sheridan Skips, we believe that strong communities are built when people come together with a shared purpose. That’s why we were proud once again to support a Manchester clean up initiative by providing skips completely free of charge, helping residents safely and efficiently clear waste and reclaim their environment.
This effort was delivered in partnership with One Manchester, an organisation dedicated to improving the lives and neighbourhoods of local people. Together, we worked to ensure that residents had the resources they needed to take pride in their surroundings and make a visible difference in their community.
The clean-up also aligns with the wider goals of Manchester City Council’s “Keep Manchester Tidy” campaign, which encourages everyone to play their part in maintaining cleaner, greener, and more welcoming neighbourhoods across the city. By supporting this initiative, we are contributing to a broader movement focused on sustainability, civic pride, and environmental responsibility.
Providing skips free of charge for this project meant that residents could dispose of unwanted items responsibly without the usual cost barrier. From household waste to bulky items, our skips made it easier for volunteers and families to work together and achieve real results in a short space of time.
We’re incredibly proud to have played a small part in such a positive initiative. Seeing communities come together, take action, and transform their local areas is exactly why we do what we do.
At Sheridan Skips, we’re always looking for ways to give back and support meaningful projects. If you’re organising a community clean-up or local initiative, we’d love to hear from you and explore how we can help.
Sheridan Skips are committed to doing more than just providing a service, we want to make a real difference in the communities we work in. Supporting this clean-up initiative free of charge, alongside our partners at One Manchester, is something we’re incredibly proud of. When local people come together to improve their environment, it’s important that businesses step up and support that effort wherever possible.
Together, we can keep Manchester tidy—one skip at a time.
At Sheridan Skips, we believe that every piece of waste has the potential for a second life. That’s why we are proud to support Global Recycling Day, an international initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of recycling and sustainable waste management.
Why Recycling Matters Recycling isn’t just about reducing waste—it’s about protecting our environment, conserving resources, and creating a sustainable future. From household clutter to garden waste or construction debris, much of what we discard can be recycled and repurposed if handled correctly.

Hiring a skip is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to manage waste from home renovations, garden clearances, or construction projects. However, many people are unsure about what they can and cannot place inside a skip. Knowing the rules before you start loading your skip can help you avoid extra charges, delays, or environmental issues.
In this guide, we explain what can and cant go in a skip, what should stay out, and how to dispose of restricted items responsibly when using a skip from Sheridan Skips.
What Can Go in a Skip? Most everyday waste from homes, gardens, and building projects can be safely disposed of in a skip. If the materials are non-hazardous, they are generally suitable for skip disposal.
Common items that can go in a skip include:
General household waste
Garden waste such as branches, leaves, and plants (In a 12 or 16)
Soil and rubble (up to an 8 yard)
Bricks and concrete (up to an 8 yard)
Wood and timber
Plastics and packaging
Scrap metal
Construction debris
These types of waste are typically classed as dry or non-hazardous materials, making them suitable for standard skip hire002E
For example, if you’re clearing out a garden, renovating a kitchen, or removing old paving slabs, a skip is a convenient way to dispose of the resulting waste in one place.
Items That Cannot Go in a Skip Certain items are restricted from skips due to environmental regulations, safety risks, or specialist disposal requirements. These materials must be handled through licensed recycling or hazardous waste services.
Items that cannot go in a skip typically include:
Fluorescent light tubes
Gas cylinders and pressurised containers
Tyres (We can take these with a small fee)
Oil, fuel, paint, or other liquids
Aerosols
Explosive or hazardous materials
Perishable or food waste
Mattresses (We do take but we charge)
Carpets (We do take but we charge)
Many of these items contain hazardous chemicals or require specialised recycling processes, which is why they are not accepted in standard skip hire.
If you need to dispose of any of these materials, your local recycling centre or council waste service can advise on the correct disposal method.
Why Some Items Are Restricted As a skip hire company, we follow strict environmental guidelines to ensure waste is handled responsibly. Certain materials are banned because they:
Pose health and safety risks to workers
Contain toxic or hazardous substances
Require specialist recycling facilities
Could cause fires or chemical reactions
For example, batteries and electrical equipment often contain hazardous metals, while liquids like oil or paint can contaminate other waste streams.
By keeping these materials out of your skip, you help ensure waste is processed safely and sustainably.
Avoid Overfilling Your Skip Another important rule when hiring a skip is not to overfill it. Waste should never extend above the skip’s fill line. Overloading a skip can make it unsafe to transport and may result in additional charges or collection delays.
If you find that your waste exceeds the capacity of your skip, it may be better to arrange an additional skip rather than stacking waste above the limit.
Tips for Using Your Skip Efficiently To get the most out of your skip hire, consider these simple tips:
Break down bulky items Disassembling furniture or large materials helps maximise space.
Load heavy items first Place heavier materials like bricks and rubble at the bottom.
Spread waste evenly This keeps the skip balanced and easier to collect.
Separate restricted materials Keep prohibited items aside so they can be disposed of properly.
Not Sure What You Can Put in Your Skip? If you’re ever unsure about whether an item can go in your skip, it’s always best to check with your skip provider before disposing of it. Different materials may require special handling or additional fees.
The team at Sheridan Skips is always happy to help you understand the correct way to dispose of waste and ensure your project runs smoothly.
Final Thoughts Skips are a simple and efficient waste management solution for homes and businesses alike. By understanding what can and cannot go in a skip, you can avoid complications and ensure your waste is disposed of safely and responsibly.
Whether you’re tackling a home renovation, garden clearance, or construction project, choosing the right skip and following these guidelines will help keep your site clean, organised, and compliant with waste regulations.
It’s been another exciting month for Sheridan Skips as we’ve been supporting some major projects across Manchester city centre, working closely with Buildzoneuk to ensure efficient waste management during large-scale developments, including the transformation of Piccadilly Gardens and ongoing work at the Zedwell Hotel.
With February’s activity continuing to be busy, we’re proud to play a key role in helping deliver these high-profile builds safely and sustainably.
Major Projects, Major Waste Needs
Manchester’s city centre is buzzing with redevelopment, and the demands are real:
📍 Piccadilly Gardens Transformation
This iconic public space is undergoing a complete refresh, and with heavy landscaping, demolition and material replacement underway, the need for reliable skip hire has never been greater. Sheridan Skips has been on hand to provide a range of skip sizes in this area to support companies on this project.
📍 Zedwell Hotel Build
Another headline development the refurbishment and expansion work at Zedwell Hotel requires tight scheduling and precise waste removal. We’ve supplied skips that meet both volume needs and access constraints, keeping waste streams organised and controlled.
Why City Centre Jobs Are Different
Working in Manchester’s urban core isn’t the same as serving a suburban site — it comes with unique challenges:
🚧 Tight Access & Traffic Management
Narrow streets, pedestrian zones and peak-hour traffic make deliveries and collections trickier — but our experienced team plans routes and timing to avoid disruption.
🧱 Restricted Space for Skips
City sites often have limited room for containers, which is why we offer a wide range of skip sizes, from compact mini skips to large builders’ skips — so the right fit can always be found without blocking key access points.
🗓 Strict Permit & Collection Windows
Many city centre areas require permits or have restricted collection times. Sheridan Skips coordinates with local authorities and site managers to ensure we’re compliant and efficient.
Multiple Skip Sizes — Ready When You Are
Every project is different: whether it’s waste from demolition, concrete, soil, timber or general construction debris, we’ve got a skip size for you, including:
Mini Skips – perfect for small site clearances or tight spaces
Builders’ Skips – ideal for ongoing material removal
Large/Industrial Skips – for major demolition or bulk waste
Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) – for high-volume commercial work
This flexibility is one of the reasons Buildzoneuk has trusted us with back-to-back jobs in a short timeframe.
An Exciting Time for Manchester
With city centre development running at full speed, Sheridan Skips is proud to be part of Manchester’s growth story. From public space upgrades to premium hotel refurbishments, our skip hire solutions keep job sites flowing — safely, legally and reliably.

Love your home again
A clear space can completely change how your home feels. Whether you’re:
Decluttering before a fresh start
Renovating a kitchen or bathroom
Clearing a garden ready for spring
Moving house or downsizing
A skip hire from Sheridan Skips helps you get the job done quickly and efficiently. Less mess, less hassle, and a lot more room to breathe.

We offer a range of skip sizes to suit projects big and small, with prompt delivery and collection and clear pricing. No surprises, no drama, just a service that does exactly what it says it will.

We are pleased to be supporting a 12-week accelerated works programme at one of Manchester’s best-known hospitality venues.
As part of a wider project delivered for Sheridan Facilities Management, we are managing the waste removal for the full strip-out of two iconic Manchester locations—The Bierkeller Manchester and Club Pure—as they undergo transformation into a brand-new sports bar set to bring fresh energy to the city’s nightlife scene.
Only three weeks into the programme, we have already supplied more than 250 skips to keep the project on schedule. Due to restrictions imposed by Manchester City Council, this has required careful planning, coordination, and responsive service from our team to ensure all waste is removed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with local regulations.
Wait & Load Skip Hire Manchester
As the name implies, Wait and Load Skips remove the need to keep a skip on your property for up to two weeks. Your chosen skip size is delivered just like a standard skip hire—often on the same day—but positioned as close as possible to both the waste and the skip lorry to ensure a fast, efficient collection.
“We are delighted to be working with such an Iconic Manchester venue on such an exciting project.
